This week I’ve chosen to reflect on the film Most Likely to Succeed and the discussion it created in the class, as well as just with myself. The film centres around the change in the current education model. I am really interested in this new wave of education because our society and job market have evolved so much since the industrial revolution and our education system should reflect that. I liked that the teachers were learning along side with the kids because there are no guidelines really. The most surprising part for me was the fact that some parents were more concerned that the children didn’t have homework than actually noticing the change in the children’s involvement. But you can’t fully disagree with the parents because the entire education system is supposed to be based on good test scores which we are conditioned to think come from high volumes of work and knowledge. The students at High Tech High seemed to love being at school and exploring at their own pace which you cannot always say for traditional high schoolers. I really enjoyed seeing one boy were had been stressed about not making a deadline going back to school and finishing his work even when the showcase was over. In my high school if you miss the deadline you get a zero and you have to move on, which I think makes students rush through things and not produce their best work, Especially for timed exams. Having a 2 hour time slot to show everything you’ve learn in 5 months even sounds impossible. This film really made me think about my future career and how I will be responsible for creating an environment that makes students want to learn and grow. Maybe I’ll work in a progressive school or maybe I’ll have to adapt where I am to become progressive.
